NH §2: Androscoggin Valley (US-2) to Pinkham Notch (NH-16)

New Hampshire §2 spans 21.1 miles. Parking is available for nine mileposts.

Note: The AT in §2 coincides with other named trails: Rattle River Trail, Kenduskeag Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Wildcat Ridge Trail Lost Pond Trail. See ATC guidebook or map for locations.

Mp 0.2/20.9: US-2

Locate: {44.40108, -71.10936}

Orient: In Shelburne, §1 and §2 meet at the intersection of US-2 and North Road, 3.6 mi east of NH-16 [Glen Road] in Gorham. Parking is available 0.2 mi east in the trailhead lot for Rattle River Trail, on the south side of US-2.

Park: Room for a dozen or so cars in trailhead lot. Alternative parking is available at the Rattle River Lodge and Hostel, at the intersection of US-2 and North Road; small fee.

Connect: For AT northbound, follow US-2 west for 0.2 mi, then turn right onto North Road. For AT southbound, follow footpath from back of lot into woods.

Mp 5.9/15.2: via Carter-Moriah Trail

Locate: {44.38244, -71.16938}

Orient: The Carter-Moriah Trail starts at the southwest terminus of Bangor Street in Gorham. Bangor Street branches from US-2 [Main Street] 0.6 mi east of NH-16 [Glenn Street]. From US-2: follow Bangor Street southwest for 0.5 mi to its end.

Park: Roadside parking for a half dozen or so cars in wide shoulder on east side of road. (Alternative parking on the west side of Peabody River looks possible at Libby Memorial Recreation Area {44.381757, -71.172106}, on Mill Street. From park: walk north on Mill Street to right towards suspension bridge over river; cross river to right onto Bangor Street; walk south on Bangor to trailhead; about 0.3 mi total.)

Connect: Follow Carter-Moriah Trail for 4.5 mi to summit of Mount Moriah, then continue to AT at junction of Carter Moriah Trail and Kenduskeag Trail. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 7.3/13.8: via Stony Brook Trail

Locate: {44.36322, -71.17753}

Orient: The trailhead lot for Stony Brook Trail is on NH-16 in Gorham 1.8 mi south of US-2 [Main Street] and 20.6 mi north of of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn. The lot is on the east side of NH-16 just north of Stony Brook Road. From NH-16: turn east onto Stony Brook Road; turn immediate left into lot.

Park: Looks like room for a dozen or two cars in lot; WMNF fee.

Connect: Follow Stony Brook Trail for 3.6 mi to AT {44.33176, -71.14327}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 9.9/11.2: via north Imp Trail and North Carter Trail

Locate: {44.32329, -71.21692}

Orient: The north branch of the Imp Trail starts on NH-16 [White Mountain Road] 5.3 mi southeast of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 17.0 mi north of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn.

Park: Room for a half dozen or so cars in pull-off on east side of road. Trailhead is signed.

Connect: Follow yellow-blazed Imp Trail for 3.1 mi to left onto North Carter Trail {44.31326, -71.18596}; continue on North Carter Trail for 1.2 mi to AT {44.31006, -71.16778}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 9.9/11.2: via south Imp Trail and North Carter Trail

Locate: {44.31965, -71.21704}

Orient: The trailhead for the south branch of the Imp Trail is 0.3 mi south of the trailhead for the north branch; see Mp 9.9/11.2, above.

Park: Room for a half dozen or so cars in pull-off on east side of road. Trailhead is signed.

Connect: Follow yellow-blazed Imp Trail for 3-plus mi onto North Carter Trail; continue as above.

Note: Assorted trail reviews describe the descent west along the south branch of Imp Trail back to NH-16 as difficult because of slippery, rocky footing going downhill. They suggest returning from North Carter Trail to NH-16 along the north branch instead.

Mp 12.6/8.5: via Nineteen-Mile Brook and Carter Dome Trail

Orient: The trailhead lot for Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail is on NH-16 in Gorham 6.8 mi south of US-2 [Main Street] and 15.5 mi north of of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn. The lot is on the east side of NH-16 and is easily seen from the road.

Park: Looks like room for two dozen or so cars in lot; WMNF fee.

Connect: Follow Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail for 1.9 mi to left onto the Carter Dome Trail {44.28126, -71.20047}; continue on Carter Dome Trail for 1.9 mi to AT {44.28097, -71.17352}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 15.4/5.7: via Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail

Locate: {44.30230, -71.22090}

Park: See Mp 12.6/8.5, above, for directions to trailhead parking for the Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail.

Connect: Follow Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail for 3.6 mi to AT {44.26164, -71.19565}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 18.2/2.9: via Wildcat Mountain Ski Area Gondola

Locate: {44.26484, -71.24032}

Orient: The gondola for the Wildcat Mountain Ski Area connects to the AT near Wildcat Mountain Peak D; check the ski area's website for hours of operation and fees. The ski area is on the east side of NH-16 in Jackson 9.7 mi southwest of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 12.0 mi northwest of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn.

Park: Park in huge lot for ski area.

Connect: Ride gondola to summit landing, a short hop north of AT {44.24906, -71.22465}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 20.2/0.9: NH-16 [White Mountain Road]

Locate: {44.24753, -71.25353}

Orient: The Lost Pond Trail and the Wildcat Ridge Trail meet at Mp 20.2/0.9, near Glenn Ellis Falls. Trailhead parking for the falls area is 0.7 mi south of the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and Joe Dodge Lodge; see Mp 21.1/0.0, below.

Park: Park in large lot for Glenn Ellis Falls; signed, WMNF fee.

Connect: Find trailhead for Wildcat Ridge Trail (and Glenn Ellis Falls Trail) at south end of lot. The Wildcat Ridge Trail here serves as a 0.1 mi connector to the AT. It uses a pedestrian underpass to cross NH-16 and subsequently merges into the AT {44.24574, -71.25146} on the east side of Ellis River. Rock-hopping or fording is required to cross the river; crossing my be difficult or dangerous in high water. For AT northbound, continue ahead on Wildcat Ridge Trail (heading east). For AT southbound, turn left onto Lost Pond Trail (heading north).

Mp 21.1/0.0: NH-16 [White Mountain Road]

Locate: {44.25693, -71.25222}

Orient: The AT crosses NH-16 at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and Joe Dodge Lodge, 10.6 mi southwest of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 11.1 mi northwest of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn. The entrance is on the west side of road.

Park: Park in huge but popular lot at visitor center. Overflow parking is available 0.9 mi north at Wildcat Mountain Ski Area, on east side of road. More overflow parking looks possible 0.2 mi south in lot on west side of road.

Connect: The AT crosses the road near the main entrance, at opposite ends of the exit driveway. For AT northbound (here going east), find Lost Pond Trail across road; signed. For AT southbound (hear going north), find Tuckerman Ravine Trail near visitor center.
