NH §3: Pinkham Notch (NH-16) to Crawford Notch (US-302)

New Hampshire §3 spans 26 miles. Parking is available for seventeen mileposts.

Note: The AT in §3 coincides with other named trails: Tuckerman Ravine Trail, Old Jackson Road, Madison Gulf Trail, Great Gulf Trail, Osgood Cutoff, Osgood Trail, Gulfside Trail, Crawford Path, Webster Cliff Trail. See ATC guidebook or map for locations.

Mp 0.0/26.0: NH-16 [White Mountain Road]

Locate: {44.25693, -71.25222}

Orient: The AT crosses NH-16 at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and Joe Dodge Lodge, 10.6 mi southwest of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 11.1 mi northwest of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn. The entrance is on the west side of road.

Park: Park in huge lot at visitor center; this popular lot can fill. Overflow parking is available 0.9 mi north at Wildcat Mountain Ski Area, on east side of road. More overflow parking looks possible 0.2 mi south in lot on west side of road.

Connect: The AT crosses the road near the main entrance, at opposite ends of the exit driveway. For AT northbound (here going east), find Lost Pond Trail across road; signed. For AT southbound (hear going north), find Tuckerman Ravine Trail near visitor center.

Mp 1.9/24.1: Mt Washington Auto Road

Orient: The AT crosses the Mt Washington Auto Road about two miles from the road's base terminus in Pinkham Notch; see Mp 13.5/12.5, below. From entrance: follow Mt Washington Auto Road for 2.1 mi to paved pull-off on left (south) side of road, at crossing.

Park: Room for a dozen cars in marked spaces.

Connect: For AT northbound (here going south), follow Old Jackson Road (trail). For AT southbound (here going north), follow Madison Gulf Trail.

Mp 4.2/21.8: via Great Gulf Trail

Orient: The trailhead lot for Great Gulf Trail is on NH-16 [White Mountain Road] 6.3 mi southwest of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 16 mi north of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glenn. Find lot on west side of road; signed for "Great Gulf Wilderness".

Park: Park in huge WMNF lot; WMNF fee. There is additional parking at trailhead for Great Gulf Link Trail at south end of Campground Road.

Connect: Follow Daniel Webster Scout Trail for 3.5 to AT {44.3278, -71.26934}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Note: Dolly Copp Campground Road is closed in winter.

Mp 7.8/18.2: via Valley Way

Locate: {44.37154, -71.28887}

Orient: The Appalachia parking area for hikers serves Valley Way (trail). The lot is on US-2 [Gorham Hill Road] in Randolph 5.2 mi southwest of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 17.8 mi southeast of US-3 [Prospect Street] in Lancaster.

Park: Room for about two-dozen cars in lot on south side of road; signed.

Connect: Follow Valley Way Trail for 4.2 mi to AT {44.32807, -71.28366}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Note: The ATC guidebook comments that Valley Way as the safest route for bad-weather travel between the Appalachia parking area and Madison Springs Hut.

Mp 8.1/17.9: via Air Line Trail

Orient: The Appalachia parking area for hikers on US-2 serves Airline Trail; see Mp 7.8/18.2 , above.

Connect: Follow Airline Trail for 3.7 mi to AT {44.32625, -71.28777}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Note: The ATC guidebook comments that Airline Trail is the shortest route between the Appalachia parking area and Mt Adams.

Mp 8.7/17.3: via Lowe's Path

Locate: {44.36445, -71.32873}

Orient: The trailhead for Lowe's Path is adjacent to Lowe's gas station on US-2 [Gorham Hill Road] in Randolph, 7.2 mi southwest of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 15.8 mi southeast of US-3 [Prospect Street] in Lancaster.

Park: It looks like hikers can park in lot for Lowe's gas station for a small fee.

Connect: Find trailhead about 0.1 mi southwest of gas station, on south side of road. Follow Lowe's Path for 4.4 mi to AT {44.32167, -71.29632}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 10.2/15.8: via Caps Ridge Trail and Mt Jefferson Loop

Locate: {44.29689, -71.35429}

Orient: The trailhead lot for Caps Ridge Trail is on Jefferson Notch Road. Jefferson Notch Road branches northeast from Base Station Road 4.5 mi east of US-302 in Jefferson (see Mp 13.5/12.5, below). From Base Station Road: follow gravel Jefferson Notch Road for 3.2 mi to lot on right (east) side of road. Alternatively, from US-302 in Bretton Woods (see Mp 16.8/9.2, below): follow Mt Clinton Road northeast becoming Jefferson Notch Road (at Base Station Road) for 6.8 mi to lot on right (east) side of road.

Park: Room for 2–3 dozen cars in lot at trailhead; WMNF fee.

Connect: Follow Caps Ridge Trail for 2.5 mi to left onto Jefferson Loop {44.3043, -71.31649}; continue northeast on Jefferson Loop for 0.3 mi to AT {44.30821, -71.31322}. Alternatively, from junction of Caps Ridge Trail and Jefferson Loop: follow Jefferson Loop for 0.1 mi to right onto Six Husbands Trail {44.30501, -71.31558}; continue briefly on Six Husbands Trail to AT {44.30504, -71.3116} at Mp 10.5/15.5. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Note: Jefferson Notch Road and Mt Clinton Road are closed in winter.

Mp 11.0/15.0: via Caps Ridge and Cornice Trails

Park: See Mp 10.2/15.8, above, for directions to trailhead lot for Caps Ridge Trail.

Connect: Follow Caps Ridge Trail for 2.1 mi to right onto Cornice Trail {44.30131, -71.32251}; continue on Cornice Trail for 0.5 mi to AT {44.29895, -71.31604}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 12.2/13.8: via Jewell Trail

Locate: {44.26720, -71.36149}

Orient: Jewell Trail and Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail (Mp 14.9/11.1, below) have a common trailhead on Base Station Road, which serves the Mount Washington Cog Railway; see Mp 13.5/12.5, below. From US-302: follow Base Station Road for 5.5 mi to lot on right (south) side of road.

Park: Room for several dozen cars in lot; WMNF fee, pit toilet. Additional parking is available at the railway's hiker lot a half mile farther on Base Station Road; fee ($5–$10), flush toilets.

Connect: Find trailhead on opposite (north) side of Base Station road; signed. Follow Jewel Trail for 3.7 mi to AT {44.28219, -71.31674}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Note: Alternatively, find Jewell Link behind railway station and on north side of tracks. Follow link to Jewell Trail proper {44.27364, -71.34778}. Turn right and continue to AT.

Mp 13.5/12.5: via Mount Washington Cog Railway

Locate: {44.26969, -71.35131}

Orient: The Cog Railway connects Base Station Road in Mount Washington to the AT near the mountain's summit; significant fare (over $50). Base Station Road branches southeast from US-302 in Jefferson 5.1 mi southeast of US-3 in Twin Mountain. From US-302: follow Base Station Road for 6.1 mi into parking lots for railway.

Park: Parking fee is included in railway fare.

Connect: Ride railway to summit and find AT near antenna towers at terminus of service road. For AT northbound, take Trinity Heights Connector. For AT southbound, take Crawford Path.

Note: The website of Mount Washington Cog Railway admonishes that return trips from the summit are not guaranteed: "Always be prepared to hike back down just in case!" See hiking page under "Plan Your Trip" for details.

Mp 13.5/12.5: Mount Washington Auto Road

Orient: The AT summits Mount Washington near the terminus of Mount Washington Auto Road. The road's base terminus in Pinkham Notch {44.289482, -71.224946} branches from NH-16 [White Mountain Road] in Jackson 7.8 mi south of US-2 [Main Street] in Gorham and 14.6 mi north of US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Glen. From NH-16: follow Auto Road for 7.6 mi to summit terminus; significant fee (over $30 for a car).

Park: Park in huge lot at terminus of Mount Washington Auto Road. Lot closes between 4:45 PM and 6:45 PM, depending on time of year.

Connect: Find AT near antenna towers at terminus of service road. For AT northbound, take Trinity Heights Connector. For AT southbound, take Crawford Path.

Mp 14.9/11.1: via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail

Orient: Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail shares its trailhead on Base Station Road with Jewell Trail; see Mp 12.2/13.8, above.

Connect: Find trailhead on east side of lot. Follow Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail for 3.1 mi to AT {44.25859, -71.31909}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 16.8/9.2: via Edmands Path

Locate: {44.24897, -71.39147}

Orient: Edmands Path starts from Mt Clinton Road, which branches northeast from US-302 in Bretton Woods 8.8 mi southeast of US-3 in Twin Mountain. From US-302: follow Mt Clinton Road for 2.3 mi to right (east) into lot.

Park: Room for a dozen or so cars in lot; WMNF fee.

Connect: Follow Edmands Path for 3.3 mi to AT {44.24253, -71.34462}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Note: Mt Clinton Road is closed in winter.

Mp 18.7/7.3: via Crawford Path

Locate: {44.22272, -71.41110}

Orient: This lot on Mt Clinton Road hosts the trailhead of the Crawford Connector, a short spur to the Crawford Path; it appears to be the sanctioned lot for Crawford Path. Mt Clinton Road branches northeast from US-302 in Bretton Woods 8.8 mi southeast of US-3 in Twin Mountain. From US-302: follow Mt Clinton Road for 0.1 mi to left (west) into lot.

Park: Room for a few dozen cars in paved lot; WMNF fee. Privy.

Connect: Find trailhead for Crawford Connector at north end of lot, near kiosk; follow Crawford Path Connector for 0.4 mi to left onto Crawford Path; continue on Crawford Path for 2.7 mi to AT {44.2278, -71.3647}. Or, find traditional trailhead on US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] across from AMC Highlands Center, about 0.2 mi south of Mt Clinton Road {44.21978, -71.41022}; follow Crawford Path for 2.9 mi to AT. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Mp 19.7/6.3: via Crawford Path and Mizpah Cutoff

Mp 21.3/4.7: via Webster-Jackson Trail

Locate: {44.21445, -71.40771}

Orient: Webster-Jackson Trail starts from US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] in Carroll 9.2 mi southeast of US-3 in Twin Mountain and 27.5 mi northwest of NH-16 in Conway.

Park: Room for a dozen or so cars in pull-off on west side of road. Additional parking for a half-dozen or so cars 200 yd north on east side of road, in pull-off at trailhead for Saco Lake Trail {44.216065, -71.409183}. More parking may be possible in huge lot of AMC Highland Center 0.2 mi northwest {44.218600, -71.410795}.

Connect: Find trailhead on east side of road a short hop north of parking area. Follow Webster-Jackson Trail for 1.3 mi to left fork onto Jackson Branch Trail; continue on Jackson Branch Trail for 1.2 mi to AT {44.20328, -71.37532}. For AT northbound, turn left. For AT southbound, turn right.

Orient: The trail crosses US-302 [Crawford Notch Road] at Willey House Station Road 12.2 mi southeast of US-3 in Twin Mountain and 25 mi northwest of NH-16 in Conway. Willey House Station Road branches south from US-302 a mile southeast of the Willey House Site on US-302.

Park: Room for half dozen cars in pull-off at intersection of US-302 with Wiley House Station Road; south side of US-302 and east side of Wiley House Station Road.
