TNC §10: Nolichucky River to Spivey Gap (US-19W)

Tennessee-North Carolina §10 spans 11.2 miles. Parking is available for two mileposts.

Mp 0.0/11.2: Chestoa Pike and Unaka Springs Road

Orient: The AT meets the intersection of Chestoa Pike and Unaka Springs Road in Erwin, TN, at the west end of the Chestoa Pike bridge over the Nolichucky River. This is the junction of the southbound footpath (§10) and the brief road walk across the bridge (§9). From I-26 exit 32 in Erwin: head east on TN-36 [Jackson Love Highway] to right onto TN-36 [Temple Hill Road]; follow TN-36 for 0.8 mi to left onto Unaka Sprigs Road; continue on Unaka Springs Road for 0.5 mi to intersection with Chestoa Pike.

Park: There are pull-offs along the southwest corner of the intersection of Chestoa Pike and Unaka Springs Road. Room for 2–3 cars along south shoulder of Chestoa Pike. Room for 2–3 cars along west shoulder of Unaka Spring Road.

Mp 0.0/11.2: via Chestoa Pike from Jones Branch Road

Orient: To cross the Nolichucky River in Erwin, the AT (§9) coincides with Chestoa Pike for 0.1 mi between Jones Branch Road along the river's east bank and Unaka Springs road along the west bank; see Mp 0.0/11.2, above.

Park: Room for a half dozen cars in pull-off on west side of Jones Branch Road, just south of Chestoa Pike. Room for 1–2 cars in each of two additional pull-offs farther south on Jones Branch Road. Additional parking is available 0.3 mi farther south on Jones Branch Road in the large parking lots of the USFS Chestoa Recreation Area; see Mp 20.0/0.1 of §9.

Connect: For AT northbound (§9), take footpath from southeast corner of intersection. For AT southbound (to §10), take Chestoa Pike west along bridge over Nolichucky River.

Mp 11.2/0.0: US-19W

Locate: {36.03171, -82.42005}

Orient: The AT crosses US-19W at Spivey Gap 8.9 mi southeast of I-26 exit 43 in Erwin, TN, and 20.7 mi northwest of US-19E in Burnsville, NC.

Park: Room for a half dozen cars in pull-off on south side of road, a few yards south of crossing. Additional parking for a few cars looks possible 0.3 mi farther north in a pull-off on the southeast side of US-19W; look for USFS sign (Spivey Gap Recreation Area?).

Connect: Look for log steps and blaze post in embankment on north side of road. For AT northbound, take steps onto footpath. For AT southbound, take footpath on opposite side of road.
