VASW §36: Lickskillet Hollow Road (VA-608) to Brushy Mountain (US-52)

Southwest Virginia §36 spans 13.3 miles. Parking is available for four mileposts.

Mp 0.0/13.3: via VA-608 [Price Ridge Road]

Locate: {37.15712, -80.96111}

Orient: VA-608 branches north from VA-42 [E Bluegrass Trail] about 14.1 mi west of VA-100 [Pulaski Giles Turnpike] and 9.4 mi east of US-52 [N Scenic Highway]. From VA-42 at VA-608 {37.147499, -80.963799}: take VA-608 north for 0.8 mi to pull-off on right (east) side of road.

Park: Room for 4–6 cars in pull-off on east side of VA-608, where footpath and roadway meet.

Connect: The AT and VA-608 coincide for the southernmost 0.1 mi of §35. Neither of the footpath-pavement junctions at §35 Mp 5.2/0.1 and §35 Mp 5.3/0.0 is signed, but short plank bridges over roadside gullies mark both junctions. For AT northbound, take plank bridge onto footpath from east side of road. For AT southbound, follow road south (left) for 0.1 mi and turn right at plank bridge onto footpath on west side of road, the north terminus of §36.

Note: The ATC guidebook calls VA-608 Lickskillet Hollow Road, but road signs and online maps say Price Ridge Road.

Mp 4.3/9.0: VA-611 [Slide Mountain Road]

Locate: {37.14606, -81.00833}

Orient: VA-611 branches northwest from VA-42 [E Bluegrass Trail] 16.5 mi west of VA-100 [Pulaski Giles Turnpike] and 7.0 mi east of US-52 [N Scenic Highway]. From VA-42 at VA-611 {37.136015, -81.003268}: take VA-611 for 1.2 mi to parking on right (east) side of road, at a bend rightward-to-leftward. The road is gravel here.

Park: Room for 4–6 cars in pull-off on east side of road at trail crossing. The trail is not signed here, but it is easy to see.

Mp 12.5/0.8: VA-612 [Kimberling Road]

Locate: {37.13965, -81.11987}

Orient: VA-612 branches east from the tip of the hairpin bend in US-52 [N Scenic Highway] about 2.8 mi north of VA-42 [East Bluegrass Trail] in Bland; see Mp 13.3/0.0, below. From hairpin bend of US-52 at VA-612 {37.138147, -81.130317}: follow VA-612 for 0.7 mi to pull-off on right (south) side of road.

Park: Room for a half-dozen or so cars.

Connect: The AT follows VA-612 and a bit of US-52 for the southernmost 0.8 mi of §36. Parking is available at a pull-off where the footpath and VA-606 meet at Mp 12.5/0.8. For AT northbound, take footpath over creek behind pull-off. For AT southbound, turn left onto pavement and continue towards I-77 overpass and US-52.

Mp 13.3/0.0: US-52 [N Scenic Highway]

Locate: {37.13717, -81.13310}

Orient: From VA-42 [East Bluegrass Trail] at US-52 [Main Street becoming N Scenic Highway] in Bland {37.103352, -81.117125}: follow US-52 north for 2.7 mi to gravel Wyrick Trail [USFS-282] on left (west) side of road; look for a few buildings where US-52 bends right (east).

Park: Room for a dozen or so cars in large pull-off at the foot of Wyrick Trail. Additional parking for 2–3 cars looks possible along the shoulder of Wyrick Trail at a sharp bend 0.25 mi from US-52 {37.13854, -81.13741}.

Note: Wyrick Trail is a forest road, well-graded but somewhat narrow (from US-52 to Mp 0.5/12.8, at least).
