VASW §37: Brushy Mountain (US-52) to Garden Mountain (VA-623)

Southwest Virginia §37 spans 15.5 miles. Parking is available for five mileposts.

Mp 0.0/15.5: US-52 [N Scenic Highway]

Locate: {37.13717, -81.13310}

Orient: From VA-42 [East Bluegrass Trail] at US-52 [Main Street becoming N Scenic Highway] in Bland {37.103352, -81.117125}: follow US-52 north for 2.7 mi to gravel Wyrick Trail [USFS-282] on left (west) side of road. Look for a few small buildings where US-52 bends right (east).

Park: Room for a dozen or so cars in large pull-off at the foot of Wyrick Trail.

Mp 0.5/15.0: USFS-282 [Wyrick Trail]

Locate: {37.13649, -81.13812}

Orient: From Mp 0.0/15.5, above: follow gravel Wyrick Trail coinciding with AT for 0.5 mi to junction of footpath and road on right (north), after passing communications tower to left (south).

Park: Room for 1–2 cars along south shoulder of road, opposite footpath.

Mp 3.0/12.5: via path from USFS-282 [Wyrick Trail]

Locate: {37.11349, -81.18419}

Orient: From Mp 0.0/15.5, above: follow gravel Wyrick Trail 3.4 mi to a pull-off on right (west) side of road.

Park: Room for a few cars in pull-off or on shoulder nearby.

Connect: Follow either of two unmarked paths a short hop west to AT {}. For AT northbound, turn right. For AT southbound, turn left.

Note: Details fuzzy here: ATC guide suggests access to AT at Mp 3.0/12.5; Rohland page says Mp 3.5/12.0. Coordinates and distance from Mp 0.0/15.5 are loose estimates. Distances of connector paths are not known.

Mp 6.9/8.6: VA-615 [Suiter Road]

Locate: {37.10386, -81.20153}

Orient: VA-615 intersects US-52/VA-42 [S Scenic Highway] 3.9 mi southwest of Main Street in Bland. From US-52/VA-42 at VA-615 {37.074785, -81.171959}: follow VA-615 northwest for 2.8 mi to parking lot on right (east) side of road.

Park: Room for many cars in large lot just south of trail crossing.

Connect: For AT northbound, turn right from road onto footpath. For AT southbound, turn left onto footpath.

Note: The AT has been multiply re-routed here relatively recently, and the ATC guidebook does not describe the final route, apparently. Details above may be off, but easy parking near crossing looks to be a sure bet.

Mp 6.9/8.6: via VA-615 [Suiter Road]

Locate: {37.10999, -81.20598}

Orient: This parking area for the High Water Trail is about 0.5 mi northwest of where the AT crosses VA-615 at Mp 6.9/8.6, above. From US-52/VA-42 at VA-615 {37.074785, -81.171959}: follow VA-615 northwest for 3.3 mi to parking areas on both sides of road.

Park: Room for several cars combined in dirt parking area on west side of road and small pull-off along east side of road.

Connect: Follow VA-615 southeast for 0.5 mi to trail crossing. For AT northbound, turn left from road onto footpath. For AT southbound, turn right onto footpath. (Or, apparently, you can follow a blue-blazed path to AT.)

Note: See note under Mp 6.9/8.6, above.

Mp 15.5/0.0: VA-623 [Burkes Garden Road]

Locate: {37.07705, -81.30706}

Orient: VA-623 branches south from VA-61 [Gratton Road and Clear Fork Creek Road] in Tazewell 19.5 mile southwest of US-77 at exit 64 and 6.3 mi southeast of US-460 at exit 3. From VA-61 at VA-623 {37.134712, -81.413510}: follow VA-623 for 12.0 miles to parking area on right (southwest) side of road at trail crossing. Alternatively, VA-623 branches north from VA-42 [W Blue Grass Trail] in Sharon Springs 10.4 mi west of US-77 at exit 52 in Bland and 17 mi east of VA-16 in Saltville. From VA-42 at VA-623 {37.049632, -81.285788}: follow VA-623 for 7.5 mi to parking area on left (southwest) side of road at trail crossing.

Park: Room for 4–6 cars in dirt lot at trail crossing.

Note: From VA-42 to the crest of Garden Mountain, gravel and dirt VA-623 is reportedly a narrow and winding road chock-full of hairpin turns but stingy on shoulder space for passing. The 7.5 mi drive takes about 30 minutes.
