Bee Day – hanging queen cage 1

First, the queen cage is hung below a top bar. The queen remains under its protection for a few days in the new hive while her pheromones permeate the colony and establish her reign. Then, she can be released safely to start her life's opus of laying egg after egg. The bees clinging to the cage here were not aggressive towards her—a good omen for her acceptance. She mated with multiple males in a single flight before packaging and is unlikely to exit the hive. Photo courtesy of LH
