Building the Hive

photographic subject of page

I chose a top-bar hive in part because I wanted to build my own box. The design is simple; free plans are easy to come by; the cost is modest. The trapezoidal cross-section makes this Kenyan style (designed by a Canadian for a development project in Kenya). Some designs have a rectangular cross-section instead. The complete set of bars forms a piecewise removable roof. The separate lid provides some weatherproofing. Resuscitating my basic carpentry skills appealed to me as an additional motivation for building a hive, and, naturally, the project justified a few enhancements to my limited, non-homeowner toolkit.
